Devastated

I guess it’s hard living life in extremes
I am not sad, I am
anguished
I am not happy, I am
ecstatic

Every emotion overwhelms my capacity
a slave to every sorrow
every tug at the heart strings

When the rain comes
most people put up their umbrellas
or run for cover.
I dance

When the sun shines
most people smile and lounge
or sigh and sweat.
I weep

I never experience the convenient numbness
that follows sadness
instead I am consumed
absorbed
devastated

I suppose I am lucky to experience
such pure happiness
I will never pretend to be thrilled by
your successes
I will feel your elation and
dance with you

But oh, when the sadness comes
I can grieve for days
at the passing of
a cloud
